Albert Francis Claridge, better known as Mr. Bert, 74 of Houston, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 4, 2018. He was born in White Plains, New York on March 31, 1943, to the late Albert Claridge and Sheila (McCarthy) Claridge. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Karlene (Pfister) Claridge, his only child, Christopher L. Claridge of Clarksburg, Massachusetts, his sister, Sheila J. LaVoie of New York, nephews Brian Camuso of California, Andrew Davis of New York, Todd David of New York and his beloved dog, Maui. Bert will be missed at family gatherings and rink side. Everyone will know he is there in spirit just the same.
Karlene and Bert moved from New York to Houston, Texas, in the summer of 1970. Houston is where Bert found his love and passion for teaching others to skate. His comprehensive understanding of how to merge skating's technical demands into personal artistic expression was a gift he shared with hundreds of students. His contribution to the sport and art of skating is eternal, continuing through the students who became coaches, just like their beloved Mr. Bert.
Forty-seven years ago, when the doors to the Galleria Ice Capades Skating Rink opened in November 1970, Bert worked as a skate guard. He worked his way up to the position of instructor/coach. Throughout his years as a teacher, Mr. Bert coached at various ice rinks including Ice Skate USA, Sharpstown, Alpine, Ice Haus, and North Cross Mall, The Woodlands. On numerous occasions he was a Competition Judge for Nationals, Regionals and local competitions. One of his biggest accomplishments was becoming a Gold Level Judge, ISI and USFS. Another was to coach many of his students to the ISI World Figure Skating Championships. Bert was well known for his ability to choreograph his students' solo routines and his expert ability to mount and sharpen ice skating blades. It all depends on the edge. Beyond all his other accomplishments Bert is most proud of the many, many friends he made over the years. Countless people throughout the city and across the country, consider him a mentor, a friend and close member of their family.
